3 inch LARGE BRUNTON SURVEYING COMPASS ( CodeC-4)

3 inch LARGE BRUNTON SURVEYING COMPASS ( CodeC-4)

Price: £35.00

Colour

A Brunton Compasses is a traditional instrument used by geologists for measurement of the altitudes of structural features. Practise with this compass will help a person develop the ability to visualise lines and planes in three-dimensional space. On the cover of this compass there is a Natural Sine Scale for calculations of different readings during a survey. Under the cover is a mirror used for taking reflecting readings from the dial. The compass is composed of a magnetic needle that is balanced on a pin so that the needle can rotate easily and becomes aligned with the magnetic field lines at the location of measurement. On the outer circumference of the compass face is a scale graduated in degrees. This scale is called a compass card. A fold out metal pointer protrudes from the compass. This pointer is used to take readings with the pin hole viewer & the slot on the arm. An index pin is situated in front of the pointer arm inside the compass. In addition to the compass needle, this compass also contains a bull's eye level, which tells you when the base of the compass is horizontal. Next to it is a clinometer level & both levels sit on a plate that is attached to a brass strip. The levels are adjusted by moving the strip situated under the compass. The entire mechanism allows measurement of dip or plunge angles. The compass may be set for the magnetic declination of a map area by turning the screw on the side casing of the compass. This screw rotates the compass with respect to the pointer. Readings can be taken through the round sighting window in the cover. A folding sight is situated at the top end of the cover. Shutting the compass presses a mechanism that locks the compass needle. This protects the magnetism when transporting the compass. All sizes are sold in a smart wooden box.
